Although the internet and the U.S. president have decided that this is a Dale Carnegie quote, I cannot find any specific reference as to the context in which Mr. Carnegie might have said or wrote this. I have found it attributed to Ingrid Bergman, W.P. Kinsella, H. Jackson Brown, Jr., and even the Square & Compass in this 1947 edition of The Uplift.
The earliest reference of this exact saying is from the 1924 The world’s best epigrams, by J. Gilchrist Lawson, where the saying is attributed to the strangely specific anonymous author, the New York American:
